The Spectacular Spider-Man #31

The Spectacular Spider-Man #31 was published in June 1979 as part of Marvel Comics' expansion of the wall-crawler's mythos beyond his primary title. This issue is particularly notable for featuring the work of writer Bill Mantlo and artist Frank Miller, marking one of Miller's earliest contributions to the Spider-Man universe before he became widely renowned for his definitive runs on Daredevil and Batman. The creative team aimed to ground Peter Parker's struggles in a gritty, urban atmosphere that prioritized high-stakes personal drama alongside traditional superhero action.

During this period, the industry was shifting toward more complex, serialized storytelling, and The Spectacular Spider-Man served as a platform for deeper character exploration. The issue was received as a solid entry in the ongoing narrative, lauded for the visual dynamism brought by Miller's emerging, shadows-heavy style. It remains a significant item for collectors who track the early career trajectory of Miller and the consistent, workmanlike storytelling that defined Mantlo's tenure at Marvel.
