The Umbrella Academy: Plan B #4

The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion, often referred to by its narrative arcs like Plan B, represents the third major limited series in the dark superhero franchise created by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the series emerged as a stylistic departure from traditional capes-and-tights storytelling, blending surrealism with the dysfunctional dynamics of a superpowered family. The creative team aimed to maintain the frantic, high-contrast aesthetic that defined the series debut, utilizing Bá’s angular, expressive linework to emphasize the isolation and psychological fragmentation of the characters.

The release of this installment continued the collaborative partnership between Way and Bá, who sought to deepen the world-building established in the first two volumes. Critical reception for this series focused on the maturation of the characters and the intentional pacing of the plot, which leaned heavily into the existential themes of the protagonists. It is widely regarded as a significant expansion of the franchise’s visual language, solidifying the series' reputation for blending gritty urban settings with fantastical, cosmic stakes.
