Where it came from
Released in July 1997 as part of Marvel Comics' 'Flashback Month,' The Uncanny X-Men #-1 was designed to provide retroactive origin stories for established titles. During this period, Marvel published negative-numbered issues to explore the histories of their flagship characters, aiming to fill narrative gaps and provide context for long-standing readers who were curious about the early lives of the X-Men before their formal introduction in the 1963 debut.
This specific issue was written by Terry Kavanagh and illustrated by Roger Cruz. The creative team leaned into the aesthetic styles popular in the late 1990s while attempting to maintain the tone of the Silver Age. The issue was received as a curiosity by the collecting community, functioning primarily as a bridge between historical continuity and the contemporary storytelling trends of the nineties X-Men line.
