Where it came from
The Uncanny X-Men #185, published in September 1984, arrived during a transformative period for the X-Men franchise under the stewardship of writer Chris Claremont. This issue specifically centers on the character Rogue and her emotional reconciliation with the X-Men after her history as a villain, highlighting Claremont's focus on deep psychological character work within the framework of superhero narratives.
The issue features cover art by John Romita Jr. and interior art by Romita Jr. and Dan Green. Romita Jr.'s style during this era is noted for its gritty, angular aesthetic, which helped ground the supernatural elements of the series in a more realistic, cinematic tone. Upon its release, the issue was well-received for continuing the series' reputation for high-stakes interpersonal drama and solidifying Rogue's position as a core member of the team.
