Where it came from
The Uncanny X-Men #187, titled 'Wraithworld,' was published in November 1984 during a pivotal era for the franchise. Written by Chris Claremont with art by John Romita Jr. and Dan Green, this issue serves as a critical chapter in the 'Secret Wars II' prelude and the broader 'Dire Wraith' war arc. It reflects the darker, more space-faring tone Claremont cultivated for the X-Men during the mid-eighties, focusing on the team's entanglement with cosmic forces and the emotional fallout of their interstellar battles.
The cover art, illustrated by John Romita Jr., captures the quintessential grit and kinetic energy of his celebrated tenure on the title. Romita Jr. shifted the X-Men's aesthetic toward a more grounded, hard-edged look, emphasizing texture and dramatic lighting. The issue was received as a solid entry in a dense, long-form narrative that pushed the X-Men beyond their traditional Earth-bound conflicts, further establishing the series' reputation for complex, interconnected storytelling.
