Where it came from
The Uncanny X-Men #480, published in late 2006, serves as the opening chapter of the 'The Extremists' story arc, penned by writer Mike Carey and featuring artwork by Chris Bachalo. Coming out of the aftermath of the 'Decimation' event, the series focused on a significantly depleted mutant population, tasking Carey with redefining the X-Men’s core mission and team dynamics within an increasingly hostile world.
Chris Bachalo's distinct, angular aesthetic was instrumental in establishing the tone of this era, characterized by a kinetic and slightly surreal visual style that complemented the psychological tension Carey sought to explore. The issue was received as a solid transition for the title, praised for its focus on character-driven mystery and for successfully balancing the team’s diminished numbers with a renewed sense of urgency and threat.
