Where it came from
The Uncanny X-Men #487 was published by Marvel Comics in July 2007 as part of the 'Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire' story arc, written by Ed Brubaker with art by Billy Tan. This narrative period marked a significant expansion for the X-Men mythos, shifting the scale of the conflict from terrestrial concerns to cosmic politics involving the Shi'ar Imperial Guard and the return of Vulcan, the lost third Summers brother.
The design and artistic direction of this era were intended to provide a grittier, high-stakes aesthetic that reflected the political instability of the Shi'ar throne. Billy Tan’s pencils during this run were characterized by dynamic action sequences and a darker, more dramatic color palette, which was well-received by fans looking for a transition away from the lighter tone of the preceding era toward a more cinematic, sprawling space opera.
