Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in March 1976, The Unexpected #169 arrived during a period of transition for the company's long-running anthology titles. By the mid-1970s, DC was experimenting with their mystery and horror lineups, frequently cycling through diverse creative teams to keep the supernatural narratives feeling fresh for a changing readership.
This particular issue featured cover art by Ernie Chan and interior stories that leaned into the classic gothic suspense and twist-ending format that defined the series. The contributors aimed to maintain the macabre tone established by earlier editors while incorporating the more dynamic, bold illustrative styles that were becoming standard across the DC imprint during this era.
