The Unexpected #189

Published by DC Comics in 1978, The Unexpected issue #189 emerged during a transitional period for the publisher's long-running anthology titles. As part of a series that originated in the late 1960s, this issue leaned into the tradition of mystery and supernatural suspense that defined DC's horror-themed books, featuring a collection of eerie tales designed to capture the attention of readers looking for atmospheric storytelling beyond the standard superhero fare.

The art and editorial direction for this period reflected the house style of DC's mystery titles, where creators prioritized dark, suspenseful narratives that utilized ghosts, the occult, and psychological dread. While the series eventually concluded as the market for gothic anthologies shifted, issue #189 stands as a representative example of the publisher’s effort to maintain these niche genres through the late seventies, valued today primarily by collectors focused on mid-to-late Bronze Age horror comics.
