The Witching Hour #14

The Witching Hour #14 was published by DC Comics in 1971, emerging during a period when the publisher was heavily invested in horror anthologies to compete with the rising popularity of titles from rivals like Warren Publishing. This specific issue features the series' hallmark wraparound narrative structure, where three witches—Mildred, Mordred, and Cynthia—serve as the macabre hostesses who introduce and comment upon the short, unsettling tales contained within each issue.

The creative direction of this era was heavily influenced by the editorial oversight of Joe Orlando, who curated a gothic, suspenseful aesthetic for the series. The stories themselves were crafted by a rotating group of veteran writers and artists who prioritized atmospheric tension and ironic, twist-heavy endings. While The Witching Hour became a cult classic of the Bronze Age of comics, its reception was typical of the time, appreciated by readers for its distinct visual style and the eerie, sardonic banter of its supernatural hosts.
