Where it came from
The X-Files #17 was published in May 1996 by Topps Comics as part of their ongoing licensed series based on the popular television show created by Chris Carter. During this period, Topps sought to expand the mythology of the series beyond the television episodes, often utilizing writers and artists who were fans of the show's dark, investigative aesthetic to capture the atmospheric tension characteristic of the program.
This specific issue was written by Stefan Petrucha and illustrated by Charles Adlard, a creative pairing that defined much of the early Topps run. Adlard’s stark, moody illustration style was intentionally chosen to complement the series' cinematic focus on shadow and mystery, effectively mirroring the show's visual language during its peak popularity. It was received by readers as a faithful extension of the show's narrative, maintaining the grounded, suspenseful tone expected by the established fanbase.
