Where it came from
The Zumbies #1 was released in 2007 by Ape Entertainment, emerging during a mid-2000s surge in interest for stylized, kid-friendly horror collectibles. The series was designed as a multimedia property, intended to blend the burgeoning popularity of zombie culture with a distinct, grotesque-yet-cute aesthetic style reminiscent of vinyl toy culture. It was marketed primarily as a quirky, collectible alternative to traditional superhero comics, aiming to capture the demographic that appreciated dark humor and character-driven design.
The visual language of the series was defined by a roster of varied, ghoulish characters that prioritized bold silhouettes and exaggerated features. The creative team aimed to make the undead accessible rather than frightening, utilizing a vibrant color palette and a kinetic, cartoon-inspired art style. Upon its debut, the series garnered attention for its unique packaging and emphasis on character design, successfully positioning itself as an entry-level collectible for those drawn to gothic subcultures and stylized art toys.
