Where it came from
Thundarr the Barbarian number two was published by Marvel Comics in 1983 as part of a short-lived series based on the popular Ruby-Spears Saturday morning animated show. The comic sought to translate the post-apocalyptic, sword-and-sorcery aesthetic of the television program into a serialized print format, capitalising on the show's cult following which featured high-concept character designs by comic legends Jack Kirby and Alex Toth.
The interior art for this series was handled by Jack Abel and Win Mortimer, who worked to maintain the distinctive, rugged visual identity established by the show's animation team. While the television series was praised for its bold imagination and unique world-building, the comic book adaptation was a fleeting commercial endeavor, lasting only nine issues. It is remembered today primarily as a nostalgic artifact of early 1980s animation tie-in culture.
