Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi, crafted this narrative as a supernatural mystery involving an expedition to Inca ruins, reflecting the European fascination with Egyptology and archaeological discovery prevalent in the mid-20th century. Due to the political constraints of the era, the story had to remain strictly apolitical, leading Hergé to focus heavily on atmosphere and pacing.

The album underwent significant refinement when it was colorized and formatted into its modern structure for the 1948 publication. Hergé utilized his signature Ligne Claire style, characterized by clear, strong lines and vibrant, flat colors, to balance the ominous, suspenseful tone of the narrative with his precise, clean aesthetic.
