Toxic Crusaders #4

Toxic Crusaders #4 was published by Marvel Comics in 1991 as part of a short-lived series based on the animated television show of the same name. The series itself was a sanitized, family-friendly spin-off of Troma Entertainment's cult classic horror-comedy film, The Toxic Avenger. By pivoting the graphic, adult-oriented film into a cartoon and subsequent comic book, the creators sought to capitalize on the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, adopting a similar 'mutant hero' aesthetic to appeal to a younger demographic.

The comic was illustrated in a vibrant, high-energy style that reflected the campy, over-the-top nature of the animated series. While the franchise reached a broad audience through its toy line and television presence, the comic book series remained a niche product for fans of the show. It is often remembered as a curious relic of the early nineties, representing an era when transgressive adult cinema was frequently adapted into mainstream, kid-centric media.
