Tsuge Yoshiharu Zenshū #5

Tsuge Yoshiharu Zenshū, or The Complete Works of Yoshiharu Tsuge, was published by Kodansha in the early 1990s as a definitive retrospective of the artist's seminal career in gekiga and alternative manga. This specific volume serves as a curated pillar in a series intended to preserve Tsuge’s influential, often surrealist contributions to the Garo magazine era, capturing the transition from traditional genre storytelling to the deeply personal, psychological narratives that defined his later body of work.

The design of the collection leans into a restrained, bibliophilic aesthetic meant to honor the gravity of Tsuge’s themes, which often center on poverty, wandering, and the existential malaise of post-war Japan. By gathering his disparate works into a uniform set, the publisher sought to elevate the stature of alt-manga to that of literary fiction. Upon its release, the set was received as a milestone in comic criticism, cementing Tsuge's status as a foundational figure for the avant-garde movement in Japan.
