Where it came from
The Tsuge Yoshiharu Zenshū series was published as a definitive collection of the works of Yoshiharu Tsuge, one of Japan’s most influential alternative manga artists. Volume 7, along with the rest of the set, was compiled to preserve and honor Tsuge's legacy in the gekiga movement. The series emerged from a desire to categorize his surrealist, semi-autobiographical, and melancholic stories, which were originally serialized in influential magazines like Garo during the 1960s and 1970s.
The design of the collection reflects a minimalist and academic aesthetic, intended to treat manga as serious literature rather than disposable entertainment. The presentation focuses on clarity and archival quality, prioritizing the integrity of Tsuge’s delicate linework and unconventional paneling. Upon release, the series was received by critics as a vital retrospective, cementing Tsuge's status as a pioneer who pushed the boundaries of the medium beyond traditional genre storytelling.
