Tsuma ka Shi ka: Haisenkoku no Onna-tachi #4

Tsuma ka Shi ka: Haisenkoku no Onna-tachi (Wife or Corpse: Women of a Defeated Nation) was a historical manga series that emerged from the Japanese publishing industry's interest in examining the immediate post-World War II period. The narrative focuses on the precarious lives of women navigating the social and economic wreckage of Japan following the 1945 surrender, often highlighting themes of survival, moral ambiguity, and the erasure of traditional family structures during the Allied occupation.

The series is noted for its gritty, semi-documentary approach to historical fiction, aiming to demystify the experiences of civilian women whose stories were frequently sidelined by official military or political histories. While specific authorship of this title is often categorized under the broader umbrella of mid-to-late 20th-century historical manga production, the work is representative of an era where publishers sought to reconcile contemporary Japanese identity with the traumatic realities of the defeat and the subsequent cultural shifts forced by foreign administration.
