Tsuma ka Shi ka: Haisenkoku no Onna-tachi #5

Tsuma ka Shi ka: Haisenkoku no Onna-tachi (Wife or Corpse: Women of a Defeated Nation) emerged in the mid-1970s as a significant entry within the gekiga movement in Japan. This series sought to explore the harrowing realities faced by Japanese women in the immediate aftermath of World War II, focusing on themes of survival, social upheaval, and the loss of traditional structures in a defeated nation. The narrative voice is stark and uncompromising, moving away from idealized depictions of the period to emphasize the gritty, often desperate conditions of the post-war landscape.

The series is characterized by a mature, illustrative style typical of 1970s adult-oriented manga, prioritizing atmospheric tension and emotional weight over conventional heroic arcs. Issue #5 continues the thematic exploration of its predecessors, building upon the established atmosphere of social collapse. While the specific artistic credit for this volume belongs to the editorial and creative teams operating within the period's niche publishing houses, the work is widely regarded for its historical ambition in documenting the marginalized experiences of the era, standing as a somber reflection on the long-lasting psychological scars of total war.
