Where it came from
Ultimate Fantastic Four #15, released in March 2005, serves as a pivotal installment in the Ultimate Marvel imprint. The issue was written by Mark Millar, with interior art provided by Greg Land. It is most notable for being the first appearance of the Ultimate version of Marvel Zombies, a dark, alternate-reality iteration of iconic superheroes that garnered significant critical and commercial attention for its stark tonal shift from the mainline Fantastic Four continuity.
The narrative follows the Fantastic Four as they encounter a reality where the Earth's heroes have succumbed to a viral outbreak that renders them undead. Greg Land's detailed, realistic rendering of the decaying characters was a hallmark of the era's Marvel style, intentionally leaning into horror tropes to differentiate the Ultimate line from the broader superhero market. The issue was well-received upon release, sparking enough fan interest to launch the long-running Marvel Zombies franchise shortly thereafter.
