Where it came from
Ultimate Fantastic Four #12 was published in 2004 as part of Marvel Comics' Ultimate line, an initiative designed to modernize long-standing characters for a new generation of readers. This specific issue is notable for being the first appearance of the Ultimate version of Marvel Zombies, a concept that would soon spin off into a highly successful and cult-classic franchise of its own.
The issue was written by Mark Millar with art by Greg Land. The creative team leaned into a darker, horror-influenced tone, departing from the traditional superhero aesthetic of the main Fantastic Four series. The issue received significant attention for its striking cover and the visceral, high-stakes introduction of an alternate dimension where Earth's heroes have been transformed into flesh-eating undead.
