Where it came from
Ultimate Fantastic Four #20 was released in 2005 as part of Marvel Comics' Ultimate line, an initiative designed to modernize long-standing characters for a contemporary audience. This specific issue is notable for being the first installment of the 'Crossover' story arc, in which the Ultimate universe version of the Fantastic Four encounters the Marvel Zombies, a dark, undead iteration of the publisher's heroes.
The issue was written by Mark Millar with art by Greg Land. The creative team leaned into a stark, visceral aesthetic to contrast the traditionally heroic tone of the Fantastic Four with the grotesque nature of the zombie narrative. The story's unexpected tonal shift and the introduction of the Marvel Zombies concept were met with significant attention from readers, eventually turning the crossover into one of the most commercially successful and widely referenced storylines within the Ultimate imprint.
