Ultimate X-Men #10

Ultimate X-Men #10, released in 2001, serves as the conclusion to the 'Return of the King' story arc. Written by Mark Millar with interior art by Adam Kubert, the series was designed to modernize the X-Men mythos for a 21st-century audience, stripping away decades of complex continuity in favor of a grittier, more cinematic tone. This issue centers on the climatic confrontation between the X-Men and Magneto, solidifying the antagonistic relationship that serves as the backbone of the Ultimate Marvel universe.

The creative direction reflected the early 2000s trend toward deconstructing classic superhero tropes, with Kubert’s dynamic, detailed pencils providing a sense of grounded realism that contrasted with traditional comic book aesthetics. Upon its debut, the Ultimate X-Men series was received as a commercial success, credited with helping to revitalize interest in the franchise by making established characters accessible to a new generation of readers who were unfamiliar with the dense history of the mainstream Marvel comics.
