Ultimate X-Men #12

Ultimate X-Men #12, published in early 2002, serves as the conclusion to the 'World Tour' story arc written by Mark Millar. This series was a cornerstone of Marvel's Ultimate Universe, a line initiated in 2000 to modernize classic characters for a new generation of readers by removing decades of complex continuity. The issue features artwork by Adam Kubert, whose dynamic, cinematic style helped define the gritty and updated aesthetic that distinguished the Ultimate imprint from mainstream Marvel titles.

The narrative follows the X-Men’s confrontation with Proteus, a reality-warping mutant, across Europe. By prioritizing grounded character conflicts and a darker, more contemporary tone, Millar and Kubert sought to recontextualize the X-Men's struggle against societal prejudice. Upon its release, the issue was noted for its fast-paced action and the development of the strained political dynamics between the X-Men and the global community, solidifying the series as a commercial and critical success during the early 2000s.
