Where it came from
Ultimate X-Men #88 was published in 2008 as part of the Ultimate Marvel imprint, an early 2000s initiative designed to modernize and streamline the extensive backstories of classic Marvel characters for a new generation of readers. This specific issue falls within the 'Sentinels' arc, a recurring thematic element in X-Men history that examines the societal friction between humans and mutants, reimagined here within the high-stakes, contemporary political landscape established for the Ultimate universe.
The issue was written by Aron Eli Coleite, who brought a television-writing sensibility to the series, and features artwork by Mark Brooks. The creative team aimed to maintain the gritty, consequential tone that defined the Ultimate line, moving away from the sprawling continuity of the primary Marvel timeline. While the series initially garnered significant praise for its accessibility, by the time of issue 88, the title was navigating the later stages of the imprint's lifespan, reflecting a shift in direction as the Ultimate universe moved toward the more radical status quo changes found in later storylines like Ultimatum.
