Ultimate X-Men #87

Ultimate X-Men #87 was published by Marvel Comics in 2007 as part of the Ultimate Marvel imprint, a line initiated in 2000 to modernize and reimagine classic characters for a new generation of readers. This specific issue falls within the 'Sentinels' arc written by Robert Kirkman, who took over the series to provide a darker, more grounded take on the mutant struggle. The narrative focused on the political and social fallout of anti-mutant sentiment within the Ultimate universe, continuing the imprint's tradition of exploring more visceral and cynical themes than the mainstream continuity.

The artwork for this period of the series featured Salvador Larroca, whose realistic style defined the aesthetic of the Ultimate X-Men for several years. His contribution was intended to emphasize the grounded, gritty atmosphere of the Ultimate line, moving away from the more stylized tropes of traditional superhero comics. The issue was received by readers as a continuation of Kirkman’s character-driven approach, which often prioritized the personal conflicts of the team members over large-scale, traditional superhero spectacle, solidifying the series' status as a gritty alternative to the core X-Men titles.
