Ultimate X-Men Vol. 1, No. 1 (Free Comic Book Day Edition) #1

Released in 2002, this edition was produced as part of Marvel Comics' participation in the inaugural Free Comic Book Day, an industry-wide initiative designed to attract new readers to comic shops. It features a reprint of the first issue of the Ultimate X-Men series, a title originally launched in 2001 to modernize the franchise for a contemporary audience under the 'Ultimate Marvel' imprint.

The Ultimate X-Men series was penned by writer Mark Millar and illustrated by Adam Kubert, who sought to strip away decades of complex continuity to make the team accessible to a new generation. By repositioning the X-Men within a grittier, more grounded socio-political context, the title became a cornerstone of Marvel's commercial resurgence at the turn of the millennium. The Free Comic Book Day edition served as a strategic promotional tool to showcase this new aesthetic and narrative direction to the broader public.
