Ultimates Epic Collection: Gods and Monsters #1

The Ultimates Epic Collection: Gods and Monsters collects the foundational issues of the 2002 Ultimates series, written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Bryan Hitch. Launched under Marvel's Ultimate imprint, the series was designed to modernize the Avengers for a contemporary, 21st-century audience. By stripping away decades of complex continuity, Millar and Hitch aimed to present the team through a grounded, cinematic lens that emphasized political realism and the friction between flawed, powerful individuals.

The visual direction provided by Bryan Hitch, characterized by his panoramic, widescreen layouts and hyper-detailed photorealism, was instrumental in shaping the aesthetic of modern superhero comics. Upon release, the series was widely noted for its bold reinterpretation of classic icons, particularly the antagonistic portrayal of Captain America and the dark, Machiavellian take on Nick Fury. While polarizing to some longtime fans for its grit, the collection remains a definitive document of the early 2000s attempt to translate comic book mythology into a format accessible to modern blockbuster sensibilities.
