Un Zoo en Hiver #1

Un Zoo en Hiver, translated as A Zoo in Winter, is a seminal work of Japanese gekiga manga created by Jiro Taniguchi and written by Masayuki Kusumi. First serialized in the early 1980s, the narrative centers on a young man who moves to Tokyo to pursue a career as a manga assistant. It functions as a semi-autobiographical reflection on the creative process, the challenges of the burgeoning manga industry during that era, and the quiet search for artistic purpose in urban life.

Taniguchi, renowned for his distinctively cinematic pacing and meticulous attention to architectural and environmental detail, employed a grounded, slice-of-life approach that departed from the more kinetic shonen tropes of the time. The work was widely praised by critics for its understated emotional depth and its ability to capture the melancholy and hopeful rhythms of the early adult experience. It remains a foundational text in the seinen genre, solidifying Taniguchi's reputation as a master of observational storytelling.
