Provenance

Where it came from

The Untold Legend of Captain Marvel #1, published in 1982, emerged as a three-issue prestige format limited series intended to provide a comprehensive origin story for the Kree warrior Mar-Vell. At this time, Marvel Comics was preparing to conclude the character's long-running narrative arc in the landmark graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel, and this series functioned as a definitive retrospective to ground the character's complex history for readers.

The series was written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by Pat Broderick. The creative intent was to streamline decades of disparate continuity into a cohesive, accessible biography, blending cosmic space opera with the intimate emotional beats of Mar-Vell’s service in the Kree military. It remains well-regarded by collectors for its polished presentation and its role in solidifying the tragic, heroic legacy of the original Captain Marvel before his final departure from the Marvel Universe.
