Underworld Unleashed #1

Underworld Unleashed #1 was published by DC Comics in 1995 as the centerpiece of a company-wide crossover event. The narrative, written by Mark Waid with art by Howard Porter, centers on the demon Neron, who offers DC’s villains increased power in exchange for their souls, fundamentally altering the status quo of the publisher’s rogues gallery for the mid-nineties. The event was conceived as a way to consolidate various villainous plots across the DC Universe into one cohesive threat, signaling a shift toward more interconnected, high-stakes storytelling that characterized the era.

The visual design of the issue, spearheaded by Howard Porter, leans heavily into the dark, ornate aesthetic prevalent in comic art of the mid-1990s. Porter’s work was noted for its dramatic scale and kinetic energy, which helped establish Neron as a formidable cosmic-level antagonist. Upon its release, the issue was generally well-received for its ambitious scope and its ability to manage a vast array of characters, successfully reinvigorating several lesser-known antagonists through the thematic lens of corruption and temptation.
