Usagi Yojimbo #12

Usagi Yojimbo issue #12 was published in 1988 as part of the original Fantagraphics series. Created by Stan Sakai, the series follows Miyamoto Usagi, an anthropomorphic rabbit ronin wandering a fictionalized Edo-period Japan. Sakai developed the character during his early career in the animation industry, blending his deep interest in samurai cinema, specifically the works of Akira Kurosawa, with the aesthetic sensibilities of the independent comic book movement of the 1980s.

The design and narrative structure of this issue reflect Sakai's signature minimalist brushwork and precise character staging. In this specific arc, Sakai continues to emphasize the interplay between traditional bushido ethics and the gritty, supernatural elements of the rabbit's travels. The issue was well-received by critics for its steady consistency and historical research, cementing its place in the long-running epic that has garnered numerous industry awards for its narrative clarity and artistic dedication.
