Where it came from
Usagi Yojimbo #15 was released in 1988 as part of the initial series published by Fantagraphics Books. Created by Stan Sakai, the series follows Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit navigating a version of Edo-period Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. This specific issue reflects the series' early evolution, where Sakai began to shift from shorter, standalone episodic adventures toward more intricate, multi-part narratives that delved deeper into the political tensions and ronin culture of his world.
The aesthetic of Usagi Yojimbo is famously grounded in the visual language of classic Japanese jidaigeki cinema, particularly the works of Akira Kurosawa. Sakai designed the comic with a clean, minimalist brushwork style that emphasizes kinetic action and subtle character emotion. The series was received with critical acclaim for its ability to balance authentic historical research with accessible storytelling, establishing a dedicated cult following that has sustained the title across multiple publishers for decades.
