Usagi Yojimbo #29

Usagi Yojimbo #29, published in May 1999 by Dark Horse Comics, represents a pivotal entry in the long-running series created by Stan Sakai. The issue is part of the 'Grasscutter' storyline, a sprawling, epic narrative arc that reimagines the mythic Japanese legend of the Kusanagi sword. Sakai, who both wrote and illustrated the series, crafted this story to blend historical samurai tropes with his signature anthropomorphic animal world, drawing heavily from his deep interest in Japanese folklore and cinema.

The design and artistic direction of this issue reflect Sakai's dedication to clear, minimalist brushwork, an aesthetic choice that emphasizes movement and emotional clarity within his panels. Upon its release, the 'Grasscutter' arc was widely praised by critics and readers alike, solidifying the series' reputation for sophisticated storytelling within the independent comic scene. The issue remains a quintessential example of Sakai's ability to maintain narrative consistency and artistic integrity over a decades-long publication history.
