Usagi Yojimbo #31

Usagi Yojimbo #31, released in 1999 as part of the series' second volume published by Dark Horse Comics, represents a pivotal chapter in Stan Sakai's long-running epic. The story follows Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit in Edo-period Japan, navigating a world inspired by chanbara cinema and Japanese folklore. By this stage in the series, Sakai had firmly established the title's reputation for meticulous historical research combined with anthropomorphic character design, a balance that garnered him multiple Eisner Awards and widespread critical acclaim.

The issue is recognized for Sakai's signature clean, brush-heavy aesthetic, which draws heavily from the influence of film director Akira Kurosawa and artist Hiroshige. Sakai’s goal was always to provide a grounded, emotionally resonant narrative that functioned both as an adventure serial and a respectful exploration of bushido philosophy. The series maintained a dedicated, steady readership throughout the late 1990s, valued for its consistency, lack of gimmicky rebooting, and its unique position as a genre-blending indie staple in a market then dominated by superhero-centric tropes.
