Where it came from
Usagi Yojimbo #39 was published in 1994 during the character's tenure with Mirage Studios. Created by Stan Sakai, the series follows Miyamoto Usagi, a ronin rabbit navigating a fictionalized version of Edo-period Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. This specific issue reflects the series' signature blend of historical research, samurai cinema tropes, and detailed ink work that established Sakai as a prominent figure in the independent comics scene.
Stan Sakai’s design philosophy for the series was heavily influenced by the films of Akira Kurosawa and the classic manga Lone Wolf and Cub. By focusing on themes of honor and wandering adventure, he created a narrative style that felt both timeless and grounded. Upon its release, issue #39 continued the series' critical reputation for consistency, earning praise for its narrative pacing and the clean, expressive linework that defined the Usagi Yojimbo aesthetic during the 1990s.
