Usagi Yojimbo #41

Usagi Yojimbo issue #41 was published in 1997 as part of the series' long-running tenure with Mirage Studios. Created, written, and illustrated by Stan Sakai, the series follows the journey of Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit in Edo-period Japan. This specific issue continues Sakai’s signature blend of anthropomorphic characters with authentic historical research, utilizing a clean, brush-inked aesthetic heavily influenced by traditional Japanese woodblock prints and samurai cinema.

The issue arrived during a period of steady growth for independent comics, as Sakai transitioned the series from various publishers to maintain creative control. By this point in the series, Sakai had refined his narrative style, which prioritized character-driven character studies and philosophical dilemmas over typical superhero tropes. Critical reception for the run remained consistently high, lauded for its consistency, technical draftsmanship, and ability to weave complex Japanese folklore into an accessible, serialized format.
