Usagi Yojimbo #52

Usagi Yojimbo #52 was published in 2002 as part of the long-running series created, written, and illustrated by Stan Sakai. This particular issue continues the adventures of Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit navigating a fictionalized version of Edo-period Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. Sakai established the series in 1984, drawing heavily from his interest in Japanese history, folklore, and the classic cinema of Akira Kurosawa.

The aesthetic of the issue reflects Sakai's signature minimalist brushwork, which prioritizes clean lines and clear visual storytelling over excessive detail. By this point in the series' history, the title had moved to Dark Horse Comics, solidifying its reputation as a critical darling known for its consistent quality and blend of lighthearted adventure with thoughtful explorations of honor and bushido. Like much of the series, this issue was well-received by fans and critics for its ability to maintain a serious tone within its whimsical character design.
