Usagi Yojimbo #55

Usagi Yojimbo issue 55, released in 2003, is part of the long-running comic book series created, written, and illustrated by Stan Sakai. Set in an anthropomorphic Edo-period Japan, the series follows the ronin rabbit Miyamoto Usagi as he wanders the countryside on a warrior's pilgrimage. By the time this issue was published, the series had established a dedicated following for its historical research, character-driven storytelling, and Sakai's clean, brush-inked aesthetic.

This specific issue continues Sakai's signature blend of samurai-era tropes with folklore and humanistic themes. Designed with a focus on visual clarity and emotive gesture, the artwork reflects Sakai's influences from classic Japanese cinema and traditional woodblock prints. It was received as a consistent entry in an acclaimed independent series, praised by critics for maintaining high narrative quality and artistic integrity decades after the character's debut in the mid-1980s.
