Usagi Yojimbo #57

Usagi Yojimbo #57 was published in 2003 as part of the long-running comic book series created, written, and illustrated by Stan Sakai. The series follows Miyamoto Usagi, a masterless samurai rabbit navigating a fantastical version of feudal Japan populated by anthropomorphic animals. This specific issue continues the series' signature blend of historical samurai film tropes, particularly those popularized by Akira Kurosawa, with rich character-driven storytelling.

Stan Sakai’s design and artistic approach rely on a minimalist, clean-line aesthetic that emphasizes fluidity and motion, drawing significant inspiration from traditional Japanese brush painting and ukiyo-e woodblock prints. The series, and this era of its production in particular, has been consistently praised by critics and readers alike for its cultural research, grounded narrative tone, and the longevity of its creator's vision. By the time this issue was released, Usagi Yojimbo had already established itself as an enduring staple of independent comics.
