Where it came from
Released in 1992 by Fantagraphics Books, the Usagi Yojimbo Color Special #2 serves as a vibrant expansion of Stan Sakai’s long-running independent comic series. During this period, Sakai was transitioning his ronin rabbit character into broader prominence, and the Color Specials were designed to showcase his intricate, brush-and-ink linework through the added dimension of color palettes that standard black-and-white issues could not accommodate.
The issue features a self-contained narrative that honors the classic samurai cinema traditions—specifically the films of Akira Kurosawa—that deeply influenced Sakai’s aesthetic. Designed to appeal to both long-time readers and newcomers, the issue was received as a high-quality example of independent comic craftsmanship, cementing Sakai’s reputation for blending historical Japanese cultural elements with anthropomorphic storytelling in a medium that was increasingly experimenting with color formats.
