Usagi Yojimbo Color Special #1

Usagi Yojimbo Color Special #1 was published by Fantagraphics Books in 1991, marking a significant departure for Stan Sakai’s long-running black-and-white independent comic series. The release came at a time when Sakai’s anthropomorphic ronin, Miyamoto Usagi, was gaining considerable traction within the independent comics scene, prompting the publisher to experiment with color formats to reach a wider audience and showcase the nuance of Sakai’s world-building.

The design and production were driven by Sakai’s desire to maintain his signature blend of Japanese history and folklore while adapting to the vibrant color palette typical of the early nineties. While purists often gravitated toward Sakai's original ink work, the Color Special was well-received by critics and readers for successfully preserving the character's kinetic storytelling style and subtle characterizations despite the shift in aesthetic medium.
