Vampire #4

Vampire #4 was published in 1974 by Skywald Publications during the brief but culturally significant boom of black-and-white horror magazines in the United States. Following the relaxation of the Comics Code Authority, Skywald sought to capitalize on the popularity of titles like Creepy and Eerie by offering a grittier, more adult-oriented alternative. The magazine relied on a rotating roster of writers and artists who frequently operated under pseudonyms, reflecting the common industry practice of the era for creators balancing multiple freelance assignments.

The aesthetic of the series leaned heavily into gothic atmosphere and visceral, macabre storytelling, often featuring cover art that aimed for shock value to capture the attention of newsstand browsers. While the magazine failed to achieve the long-term critical or commercial longevity of its competitors, it remains a notable example of 1970s horror periodicals, documenting a specific period where independent publishers pushed the boundaries of the medium before the market for such magazines ultimately contracted.
