Where it came from
Vampirella #1 was published by Warren Publishing in September 1969, emerging during a pivotal era for horror and fantasy comics. Created by Forrest J. Ackerman and Trina Robbins, the character was conceptualized as a space-faring vampire from the planet Drakulon. The publication operated under the magazine format, which allowed the company to bypass the strictures of the Comics Code Authority, enabling more mature themes and elaborate artistic presentations.
The iconic cover art for the inaugural issue was illustrated by Frank Frazetta, whose work defined the aesthetic of the series. Frazetta’s portrayal of the title character emphasized a blend of gothic horror and high fantasy archetypes that became an enduring hallmark of the Warren era. The issue was well-received by readers of the time, effectively establishing the character as a cultural icon within the underground and horror comics movements.
