Venom: Tooth and Claw #1

Released in 2003 as a three-issue limited series by Marvel Comics, Venom: Tooth and Claw emerged during a period when the publisher was experimenting with darker, standalone narratives for its symbiote-focused characters. The story was written by Joe Kelly, who sought to emphasize the visceral, horror-oriented roots of the character, moving away from traditional superhero tropes to focus on the grit and isolation of the Venom mantle.

The interior artwork was provided by Frank Teran, whose distinct, jagged aesthetic defined the series' tone. Teran’s style utilized heavy shadows and distorted proportions to enhance the monstrous nature of the symbiote, a creative choice that polarized fans at the time. While some critics appreciated the atmospheric departure from typical Marvel house styles, others found the visuals abrasive, leading the series to be remembered primarily as an experimental niche entry in the extensive Venom bibliography.
