Where it came from
Viz issue 359 was published in early 2004, maintaining the publication's established role as a cornerstone of British adult satire. Created by brothers Chris and Simon Donald in 1979, the comic emerged from the Newcastle punk scene as a crude, anarchic response to mainstream children's comics, utilizing biting parody and vulgar humor to critique British culture, politics, and social norms.
The design and editorial direction of issue 359 reflect the magazine's signature visual style: a deliberately amateurish aesthetic paired with sophisticated, irreverent writing. By this period in its history, the magazine had long settled into its reputation for dark observational comedy, with features and recurring characters—such as 'Roger Mellie' and 'The Fat Slags'—serving as vehicles for the biting, often controversial satire that defined the publication's legacy.
