Where it came from
Wakiyaku no Kōshaku Reijō wa Kaikishi, Honmono no Akujo to Nari Warai Ayumu is a Japanese light novel series written by Ennui and illustrated by Saki Ukai. Emerging from the popular 'villainess' subgenre of web-novels, the narrative follows a protagonist who decides to embrace the role of an antagonist to subvert the expectations of her fictional world. The second volume continues the character-driven development established in the debut, focusing on the tactical maneuvers and comedic tensions inherent in the subversion of romance-fantasy tropes.
The series design aesthetic reflects the high-fantasy elegance typical of modern light novel imprints, with Saki Ukai's illustrations providing a visual anchor for the protagonist's transformation into a self-styled villainess. These character designs are noted for balancing traditional shojo-inspired elegance with a sharper, more assertive visual identity to match the protagonist's shifting personality. The reception of the second volume was positive among readers of the genre, who praised the series for its consistent tone and the author’s dedication to exploring the consequences of the protagonist's chosen path.
