Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #147

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue 147 was published in 1965 as part of the long-running Dell and later Gold Key comic series that brought the manic energy of the theatrical cartoons to the printed page. During this era, the comics served as a staple of newsstand culture for children, expanding the world of Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda, and Chilly Willy through original stories that leaned into slapstick humor and surreal scenarios.

The creative direction for these issues often fell under the umbrella of Western Publishing’s extensive studio team, which produced comics for characters licensed from Walter Lantz Productions. The aesthetic was designed to mirror the animation style of the shorts, prioritizing kinetic motion and bright, accessible character work. While these issues were primarily functional entertainment for a younger audience at the time of release, they have since become points of interest for mid-century comic historians documenting the evolution of licensed animation tie-ins.
