Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #136

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #136 was published in 1965 as part of the long-running Dell and later Gold Key comic book series based on the iconic animated character. These comics were produced during a period when the Woody Woodpecker franchise was a staple of children’s television, and the printed stories served to expand the reach of Lantz’s theatrical shorts into a more accessible, episodic format for young readers.

The art and stories in this era of the series were handled by a stable of professional comic book creators who maintained the high-energy, slapstick tone of the source material. These issues were designed for the newsstand market, characterized by vibrant colors and straightforward layouts intended to appeal to fans of the cartoons. While not considered high-concept art at the time, these issues have since become sought-after specimens for collectors focusing on mid-century animation tie-ins and the history of Gold Key publications.
