Web of Spider-Man #1

Web of Spider-Man #1 was published in April 1985 as the third ongoing monthly title dedicated to the character, following The Amazing Spider-Man and The Spectacular Spider-Man. Marvel Comics launched the series to replace Marvel Team-Up, intending to provide a dedicated space for Peter Parker to face solo threats while maintaining the classic status quo established in earlier decades. The inaugural issue featured a story by Louise Simonson and artwork by Greg LaRocque, setting a tone that balanced street-level superhero action with the personal burdens of Spider-Man's daily life.

The cover design for this debut issue is particularly notable for its iconic rendering of the black costume, which was a significant plot point during this era of Marvel history. The art was executed by Charles Vess, who utilized a distinct, detailed illustrative style that emphasized the character's agility and the gritty atmosphere of New York City. The issue was generally well-received by readers of the mid-80s, serving as a successful anchor for the franchise during a period when Spider-Man's popularity necessitated a broader editorial footprint.
